Written by Linda Rafferty on 01/07/2022

Finding the perfect ring size is of the utmost importance, and we at Irish Jewelry Craft are here to help you calculate the correct ring size. It isn't always possible or convenient to have your finger measured by a professional jeweler. So in this blog, our jewelry experts share a few different methods to measure your ring size at home. We also share downloadable ring sizer tools and some practical tips to help you measure your finger size accurately and find the perfect fit.

Different countries use different ring size scales, so we will refer to the scale used in the USA and Canada for this article. This scale ranges from size 0 to size 16.

Find Your Ring Size With Our Ring Sizing Guide and Printable Charts

Use one of our three easy methods to measure your ring size at home.

METHOD 1: THE STRING METHOD

You will need:

  • String, yarn, floss or a thin strip of paper;
  • Pen or marker;
  • Ruler or measuring tape.
  • Ring Sizer Chart B
  • Finger Ring Sizer Chart B
  1. Wrap a piece of string, yarn or floss around the base of the finger you plan to wear your ring on. Make sure it fits snugly, but do not stretch or pull the string too tight;
  2. Using a pen (or marker), put a mark on the string where the ends overlap;
  3. Using a ruler (or measuring tape), measure the length of the string in millimeters;
  4. Use our free Ring Sizer Conversion Chart B to find your corresponding ring size;

METHOD 2: PRINT OUR FINGER RING SIZER CHART A

You will need:

  • Finger Ring Sizer Chart A
  • Finger Ring Sizer Chart A
  • Print out our free 'finger ring sizer chart A' and cut it out;
  • Wrap the ring sizer snuggly around the broadest part of the intended finger so that the numbers are visible to you. Put the pointed end through the slit you made in the sizer;
  • Make note of the number that lines up with the slit, this is your ring size! Keep in mind that quarter sizes are also available if your sizer indicates that you are between whole and half sizes;

METHOD 3: MEASURE A CURRENT RING WITH OUR RING SIZER CHART B

You will need:

  • Ring Sizer Chart B
  • One of your current Rings
  1. Finger Ring Sizer Chart B
  2. Print out our Ring Sizer chart B (print out true-to-size)
  3. Choose a ring that correctly fits the exact finger (and hand) for whom you are purchasing the ring. In general, the engagement ring and wedding band are most commonly worn on the ring finger of the left hand;
  4. Place the ring over each of the size circles on the guide until you find the one that matches up with the inside edge of your ring;
  5. If the ring falls between two of the sizes, order the quarter size in the middle;

Helpful Hints:

  • Dominant Hand: Our dominant hands are generally slightly larger — make sure you measure the right finger on the correct hand!
  • Band Width: Rings with wider bands will fit a bit tighter. If choosing a wide band, you may need to go up a quarter of a size. If you want to measure one of your partner's rings, use one with a similar width as the ring you wish to purchase;
  • Temperature: Make sure the finger is at normal body temperature — fingers can shrink when cold or expand when hot;
  • Timing: Your fingers tend to change size throughout the day — the best time to measure your finger is at the end of the day;
  • Knuckle Size: If your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger, measure both and choose a size in between — the ring needs to be loose enough to fit over the knuckle, but snug enough so it won't fall off;
  • Average Ring Size: When you don't know your partner's ring size, selecting one of the standard ring sizes is your best choice. The average ring size for ladies is 6 to 7, and the average ring size for men is 9 to 10. It is generally easier to adjust an average ring size. For more information check our average ring sizes page., ;
  • Multiple Measurements: Using a few different methods to measure your ring size will help you find a more accurate and consistent size. So, try at least 2 of our easy techniques and do the measurement 3 or 4 times for the most precise result. .
