There is no greater power and nothing higher to which the human heart aspires than true love. When Richard Joyce, the creator of the first Claddagh ring, said goodbye to his home on the shores of Galway Bay in 1675, he planned to make his fortune before reuniting with the sweetheart he was forced to leave behind. His ship was not long at sea before a Barbary pirate vessel intercepted them, and every passenger and crew member, Richard included, was taken captive and sold into slavery on the North African coast.
The Irishman spent the next 14 years in servitude, apprenticed to a goldsmith and jeweler by his new owner. He set himself to perfect his new trade. When he regained his freedom in 1689, he refused his former master's offer of great wealth and marriage to his daughter, and chose instead to return to Ireland and his long-lost love.
Richard created the first Claddagh ring for his future wife, choosing the crown to represent their loyalty to each other over the long years they had spent apart, the hands their lifelong friendship, and the heart the unshakable love between them that triumphed over all.
