Timeless Romance And Exquisite Claddagh Design Since 1689
Although the year 1689 marks the year when the Claddagh ring was first created in Ireland, the story dates back to 1675 when its designer, Richard Joyce, set sail from his home on the shores of Galway Bay to seek his fortune in the British West Indies. As fate would have it, the unfortunate vessel was intercepted by pirates, and Richard, along with everyone aboard, was sold into servitude on the Barbary North African coast.
The determined young Irishman spent the next 14 years mastering his trade as a goldsmith and jeweler and never gave up hope that he would one day return to his home once more. When he regained his freedom in 1689, his former owner offered him his daughter's hand in marriage and a share in his fortune if he remained with him. But for Richard, there could only ever be one answer to that question.
Upon his return to the Emerald Isle, he created the first gold Claddagh ring to win the heart of his childhood sweetheart and future wife. He selected the crown to symbolize their loyalty, the hands, their unbreakable friendship, and the heart, the true love that conquered all and brought them together once more.
