During 14 long years Richard perfected his craft but never gave up hope and always dreamed of returning to Ireland and the girl he left behind. In 1689, his chance finally came, and he rejected offers of wealth and marriage to make the voyage home, praying that he had not been forgotten in the land of his birth. Richard created the first Claddagh ring with a heart to represent his undying love, the hands, the friendship that supports every great romance, and the crown, the loyalty that defeated time and distance to take him home again to his childhood sweetheart and future wife.
