Richard Joyce left Ireland in 1675 to better his prospects in the faraway British West Indies. Barbary pirates intercepted his vessel en route, and he was sold into servitude in North Africa. The determined Irishman spent the next 14 years mastering his trade as a goldsmith and jeweler, dreaming of his return to Ireland and his childhood sweetheart. In 1689, his vision became reality, and he created the first Irish Claddagh ring for his future wife, who remained loyal to him during their long years apart.
