In 1689, his opportunity came at last, and given the choice of marrying his master's daughter and a dowry fortune if he would remain in Barbary, Richard did not hesitate to make the dangerous return voyage to Ireland. There, he created his iconic design with the hands to symbolize friendship, the crown, steadfast loyalty, the heart, undying love and used the ring to win his childhood sweetheart's hand in marriage.
