Heartbreaking True Romance Captured in Emerald and White Gold

In 1675, the young Richard Joyce set out for the British West Indies, planning to make his fortune once his period of indentured servitude was complete. Unfortunately for the young Irishman, his vessel was taken by pirates, and he was sold into slavery in Barbary, North Africa, where he remained for the next 14 years. Despite the gravity of his situation, he never gave up hope of returning home and spent his time mastering his trade as a goldsmith and jeweler.
With his freedom secured in 1689, he refused the offer of his former master to marry his daughter and receive half his fortune, choosing instead to make the dangerous journey back to Galway Bay. Upon his return to Ireland, he created the Claddagh ring for his childhood sweetheart and future wife, with the crown to represent their loyalty, the hands their friendship, and the heart their undying love that overcame all obstacles to reunite the lovers once more.
