Barbary Coast pirates waylaid his ship, and the traveler was sold into servitude in North Africa. His master, noting the good eye of his newly acquired servant, apprenticed him as a goldsmith.
Fourteen years later, in 1689, when offered the hand of his master's daughter in marriage and an accompanying fortune, Joyce instantly chose to return home.
Back in Ireland once more, he created the first Claddagh ring, with the hands representing friendship, the crown loyalty, and the heart, infinite love.
