In 1675, Richard Joyce set out for the British West Indies from his quiet home in Claddagh Village on the Atlantic shores of Galway Bay. The Irishman spent the next fourteen years as the property of his North African owner, at first apprenticed as a goldsmith and jeweler and then ultimately as a master craftsman in his own right. Richard never gave up on his dream of freedom and returning to his childhood sweetheart in Ireland. When the opportunity arose, he rejected offers of wealth and marriage into his former master's family, preferring to search for his long lost love instead.
