The Claddagh story embodied in this iconic ring begins in the year 1675 when Richard Joyce, the creator of the design, set sail for the British West Indies to seek his fortune. His vessel was waylaid on the high seas, and he, along with everyone else on board, was sold into servitude in Barbary North Africa. He spent the next 14 years dreaming of one day returning home while mastering his craft as a goldsmith and jeweler.
When his opportunity for freedom came in 1689, his former owner offered him a fortune and his daughter's hand in marriage if he consented to spend the rest of his days in his employ. The choice however, was clear for Richard, and home once more on the shores of his beloved Galway Bay, he crafted the first Claddagh ring in Ireland to win the heart of his childhood sweetheart and future wife.
The crown symbolizes the fierce loyalty they maintained for one another, the hands their friendship, and the heart the love that overcame impossible odds to bring them home together once more.
