A young Richard Joyce left his home on the shores of Galway Bay in 1675 to work out his agreed period of indenture in the British West Indies. The ambitious young man was hoping to make his fortune abroad, but as luck would have it, his vessel was boarded by pirates on the high seas, and he was sold into slavery in Barbary, North Africa. 

Destined to spend the next 14 years working as a goldsmith and jeweler for his master, he always dreamed of the day he would return to the land of his birth. In 1689, the dream came true. He refused the offer of half his former owner's wealth and his daughter's hand in wedlock if he would stay in Africa. Instead, he set out to make the journey home and find the love he had left behind all those years before.

When Richard returned to Ireland, he made the first gold Claddagh ring to ask his childhood sweetheart and future wife's hand in marriage.
