When he regained his freedom in 1689, his former owner begged him to stay, offering his only daughter's hand in marriage and a generous dowry of half his wealth, but Richard could not be swayed. At home in Galway, he created the first Claddagh ring for his childhood sweetheart and future wife. He chose the heart to represent the profound love that overcame every obstacle to bring them together once more, the crown, their steadfast loyalty, and the hands, their undying, lifelong friendship.
