Timeless ‘Forever Romance’ Captured in Sapphire, Diamond and Gold
Richard Joyce, the creator of the Claddagh ring and native of the village of the same name, set out in 1675 to make his fortune overseas. As luck would have it, his vessel was waylaid by Barbary corsairs, and he was sold into slavery in the markets of Algiers. The Turkish owner who bought him set the Irishman to work as an apprentice goldsmith and jeweler, and Richard spent the next 14 years perfecting his craft while always dreaming of returning home.
When he regained his freedom in 1689, his former owner begged him to stay, offering his only daughter's hand in marriage and a generous dowry of half his wealth, but Richard could not be swayed. At home in Galway, he created the first Claddagh ring for his childhood sweetheart and future wife. He chose the heart to represent the profound love that overcame every obstacle to bring them together once more, the crown, their steadfast loyalty, and the hands, their undying, lifelong friendship.
