His ship was boarded by Barbary pirates not long into the voyage, and he was sold into slavery on the African north coast along with every other passenger and crew member. He spent the next 14 years mastering the craft of goldsmith and jeweler, appointed to him by his new owner, while always dreaming that he would one day return home.
Against all odds, he regained his freedom in 1689 and refused his former master's offer of his daughter's hand in marriage and half his fortune if he remained in Barbary.
