The true love Claddagh story combines all the elements of a big-screen romance epic, but it all began in the tiny fishing village of Claddagh on the shores of Galway Bay in 1675. Richard Joyce, the original creator of the design, set out, like many young men of the time, to seek his fortune in the British West Indies. As the fates would have it, Barbary pirates captured his vessel, and every soul on board was sold into slavery in North Africa.
Destined to spend 14 years in captivity, he never gave up hope that he would one day return to Ireland. In 1689, his dream came true, and now a master jeweler and goldsmith, he had the option of either marrying his former owner's daughter and taking a share in his wealth or returning home to Galway Bay.
His decision was never in any doubt, and upon his arrival in Ireland, he set about creating the first of his iconic gold Claddagh rings to win the hand of his childhood sweetheart and future wife in marriage. The ring he designed held a crown to show the unbreakable loyalty they had for each other, the hands their life-long friendship, and the heart their unshakable love that overcame all odds to bring them together once more.
