Open Your Heart to Endless Love
Every lover must write their own story, and the Claddagh tradition has inspired true romantics to do so for over three hundred years. Richard Joyce, the goldsmith and master jeweler who created the Claddagh design, set sail for the British West Indies in 1675 from the wild Atlantic shores of Galway Bay. Barbary pirates intercepted his ship, and everyone on board was taken into slavery on the African north coast.
The Irishman spent the next 14 years in servitude, perfecting the craft of metal work, and jewelry-making his master apprenticed him to. When he regained his freedom in 1689, his master begged him to stay, offering him a fortune and his daughter’s hand in marriage, but nothing could stop the Irishman from returning home to the childhood sweetheart he left behind. On his return to Ireland, he created the original Claddagh ring for his soulmate - The Claddagh heart represents love, the crown signifies loyalty, and the hands symbolize friendship.
