The Claddagh tradition stems from a true love story as beautiful and inspiring as the iconic ring itself. Richard Joyce was a young man when he set sail in 1675 to seek his fortune in the British West Indies. The vessel was not long at sea before a pirate ship from the Barbary Coast intercepted them, and all passengers and crew, Richard among them, were sold into slavery on the African north coast.
Richard spent the next 14 years working as a goldsmith and jeweler, perfecting his craft and dreaming of the day when he would return to Ireland and the girl he left behind. In 1689, he regained his freedom, and despite his former master's offers of great fortune and the hand of his daughter in marriage, nothing could prevent Richard from returning to his home on the shores of Galway Bay.
He created the now world-famous Irish Claddagh Ring to win his sweetheart and future wife's hand, choosing the crown to symbolize their loyalty, the hands their friendship, and the heart the undying love that held fast throughout the long years of their separation.
