He spent the next fourteen years earning his subsistence as a jeweler and goldsmith for his new master. Richard impressed his owner so much with his skill that when he regained his freedom in 1689 he offered the Irishman a fortune and his daughter’s hand if he would stay in Barbary with them. But Richard had never given up on his impossible dream of returning home to Ireland and to the true love he left behind.
In Galway once more, he presented the first Claddagh ring to his childhood sweetheart and future wife, choosing the heart to represent their love, the hands their lifelong friendship and the crown the loyalty that overcame all obstacles and brought them back together once more.
