Impossibly Romantic Claddagh Design In Sapphire Blue, White And Gold
The true story of the Claddagh ring is as romantic and filled with adventure as any big-screen production. Over three hundred years ago, in 1675, Richard Joyce, the creator of the design, set sail from the small fishing village from which the ring derives its name, seeking his fortune overseas. As the fates would have it, Barbary pirates intercepted his ship, and everyone on board, including the future master jeweler, was sold into slavery on the North African coast.
The young Irishman was destined to spend the next 14 years in servitude learning his future trade, but he never gave up on his dream of returning home one day. In 1689, he regained his freedom, and although offered a fortune and the hand of his former owner's daughter in marriage if he would stay, his decision was never in any doubt and he quickly set sail for Ireland.
Upon his return, he created the now world-famous design in order to win the hand and heart of his childhood sweetheart and future wife in marriage. The crown represents their impossible loyalty to one another, the hands, their profound friendship, and the heart, their undying love that conquered all.
