Over three hundred years have passed since Richard Joyce, the creator of the original gold Claddagh ring, set sail from Galway Bay in 1675 to seek his fortune in the British West Indies. His ship was taken by pirates, and he was sold, along with every other soul on board, into slavery on the Barbary coast of North Africa. The young man was destined to spend the next 14 years in servitude, mastering his trade as a jeweler and goldsmith before fortune smiled once more.
In 1689, his freedom secured, he rejected his former owner's offer of a fortune and his daughter's hand in marriage if he would abandon his plan to return to Ireland. Richard never hesitated in his decision and immediately embarked on the hazardous return voyage. In Galway once more, he created his now iconic ring to win the heart and hand of his childhood sweetheart and future wife in marriage. The hands represent their lifelong friendship, the crown their fierce loyalty to one another, and the heart their unshakable love that overcame every obstacle so they could be together once more.
