The incredible true love story of Richard Joyce and the Claddagh ring begins in 1675 when the young man set sail for the British West Indies to make his fortune overseas. Barbary corsairs intercepted the unlucky vessel, and all passengers and crew, Richard included, were sold into slavery on the North African coast. The Irishman spent the next 14 years working for his new master as a jeweler and goldsmith, but he never abandoned his dream of one day returning home to Galway.
In 1689, Richard’s freedom finally came, and he refused his former owner's offer of his daughter's hand in marriage and half his wealth if he would remain with them in Africa. Upon his arrival in Ireland, he created the first Claddagh ring for his childhood sweetheart and future wife, with the classic design the world knows and loves today.
