The true love story of the Claddagh ring is one of Ireland's most beloved tales and has all the elements of a big-screen production. In 1675, Richard Joyce, the inspired romantic who created the original Claddagh ring, left Ireland to seek his fortune overseas in the British West Indies. The ship he traveled on was boarded by a Barbary pirate vessel, and he was sold into slavery on the North African coast.

In 1689, he regained his freedom and turned down his former master's offer of a dowry fortune and his only daughter's hand in marriage if he would stay with them in Africa.
