In the year 1675, a young Richard Joyce, the creator of the original Claddagh design, set out to make his fortune overseas in the British West Indies. As luck would have it, Barbary corsairs boarded his vessel, and he was taken, along with every other soul on board, into slavery in North Africa. Purchased by a Turkish master, he was put to work as a goldsmith and jeweler and spent the next 14 years perfecting his craft, always dreaming of one day returning to Ireland.
In 1689, he regained his freedom and was determined to find his way home. He refused his former master's offer of his only daughter's hand in marriage and a handsome dowry if he would remain with them in Africa.
In Ireland once more, he created the first Claddagh ring to win the heart of his childhood sweetheart and future wife. He chose the crown to represent their loyalty, the hands, their unbreakable friendship, and the heart, the undying love that brought them together once more.
