Legendary Irish goldsmith and jeweler Richard Joyce was a young man in 1675 when he set out to make his fortune overseas in the British West Indies. As luck would have it, a North African corsair vessel overtook his ship, and he was sold into slavery on the Barbary coast. His Turkish owner set him to work as an apprentice jeweler, and he spent the next 14 years mastering his trade, never giving up on his dream of returning to Galway Bay.
When freedom came in 1689, he refused his master's offer of his only daughter's hand in marriage and half his fortune as dowry, preferring to make his way home to Ireland once more. Once there, he crafted the original Claddagh ring for his childhood sweetheart and future wife, choosing the heart to represent their undying love, the crown, their steadfast loyalty, and the hands, their unbreakable, lifelong friendship.
