In 1675, he set out to make his fortune in the British West Indies but lost his freedom when the vessel he traveled on was taken by Barbary pirates. Purchased by a Turkish goldsmith and jeweler in Algiers, he was put to work as an apprentice jeweler and spent the next 14 years perfecting his trade.
In 1689, he regained his freedom and refused his former owner's offer of a fortune and his only daughter's hand in marriage, preferring to return home again to Ireland. In Galway once more, he created the original Claddagh ring for his childhood sweetheart and future wife with the crown to represent their steadfast loyalty, the hands, their unbreakable friendship, and the heart, their undying love that overcame all the unimaginable obstacles that kept them apart.
