More than three centuries ago, Richard Joyce left his home in Ireland to set sail for the faraway British West Indies. The year was 1675, but as destiny would have it, his ship was captured by Barbary pirates, and Richard, along with everyone else on board, was sold into slavery on the North African coast.
Richard’s new master set him to work as an apprentice goldsmith, and he spent the next 14 years carefully perfecting his trade, always planning for the day that he would return to Ireland. In 1689, that day came, and despite the attempts of his master to keep him in Barbary with an offer of marriage to his daughter and a dowry fortune, Richard did not waver from his single-minded desire to be reunited with the people he loved most.
Safely home in Ireland once again, Richard created the first Claddagh ring for his long-lost childhood sweetheart and future wife.
