When Richard Joyce set out to make his fortune overseas in 1675, he never imagined it would be 14 long years before he saw the shores of Galway Bay once more. His ship was taken by a Barbary corsair vessel, and he was sold into slavery in the markets of North Africa to a Turkish master who set him to work as an apprentice goldsmith and jeweler.
When Richard’s freedom came in 1689, his former master begged him to stay and offered him his only daughter's hand in marriage and a handsome dowry if he would remain with them, but the Irishman would not be swayed.
