It begins when a young Irishman by the name of Richard Joyce set sail for the British West Indies to seek his fortune.
Unfortunately, as luck would have it, Barbary pirates captured Richard’s ship, and he spent the next 14 years in captivity on the North African coast. During his time in servitude, he became a master jeweler and goldsmith and never gave up on his dream of returning to Ireland. In 1689, he regained his freedom, and although his master offered him a fortune and his daughter's hand in marriage if he would remain, Richard never wavered in his decision to make the journey home.
In Galway once more, Richard created the first Claddagh ring and won his childhood sweetheart's hand in marriage. The hands represent their lifelong friendship, the crown their loyalty to each other, and the heart, their undying love that conquered all adversity to bring them together once more.
